The Hive Technology Hub, Carrick On Shannon

“Hiberform provided the contemporary functional fit-out within budget, resulting in a unique work environment”

Joe Lowe, CEO of Leitrim Enterprise Office

The Hiberform design team were busy over the summer of 2013 working on the new technology centre in Carrick on Shannon called the Hive. The centre is an iniative by the Leitrim Local Enterprise Office to offer affordable office space to local startups with hi speed broadband and a range of inhouse services. Leo Scarff collaborated with Gordon Ryan to design most of the furniture throughout the building including reception, foyer and lounge furniture, through to cafe, training rooms and workstations.
This has been a fantastic opportunity for Hiberform to expand it’s collection of in-house products as well as collaborating on custom made pieces with Gordon. Joe Lowe, CEO of Leitrim Enterprise Office said “Hiberform provided the contemporary functional fit-out within budget, resulting in a unique work environment”

Some key new products developed include the ‘Axis’ Solid wood leg workstation which comes with fabric covered pinboard screens in Camira 100% wool. These desks have an integrated cable management system and the screens can be placed at any of 6 positions on the desk – upwards or downwards giving flexibility. Storage in the work areas is provided by ‘Caddy’ mobile units in Birch Plywood. These versatile products have business card holders denoting their users identity when in storage. For hot desk users they simple wheel their caddy to the desk of their choice. Open the door right back and position close to the desk top. Two file shelves are combined with areas for laptop and a stationery drawer above. This sits directly below a post slot at the back of the unit so colleagues can place mail or messages in the unit when the person/ company is away. The caddies also provide for stand up working which from current studies should be carried out at least 30% of the time to aide circulation.

The ‘Connect’ training room tables feature white laminate on Birch Plywood with solid Ash turned legs. In work areas these legs feature fully adjustable stabilising feet and an innovative new attachment fitting just launched on the market

A number of opporunities arose to use some of our screen products so we developed the ‘Hex’ screen which the graphic designer picked up on for the logo of the centre. The screens have been used to visually separate the kitchen area from the canteen and across a services wall in the foyer. This is accessed by simply sliding the panels across an Aluminium track.

Other new products used include the ‘Axis’ cafe table in several different sizes and the ‘Caddy’ phone booth outside the hotdesking space for taking more private calls. The breakout areas also contain Hiberform products. Downstairs a high table was designed with steel rod detailing to match the Eames Eiffel chairs and these have USB fast charge units to one end. Upstairs and in the lounge/ waiting area we supplied ‘Gio’ sofas from the Mono furniture collection designed by Leo Scarff in 2006 and ‘Rock’ easy chairs (2000) in a selection of greens and grey fabric.
